Tips to Make Your Space Feel Bigger

POSTED: May 2, 2022

Main spaces can sometimes be a hub for placing daily items that clutter up the space. Having a designated, organized place for keys, wallets, etc. can really help to maintaining the cleanliness of a space, that ultimately helps the space feel bigger and brighter. Also, choosing lighter fabrics and furniture will achieve this as well. By keeping styling to a minimal and choosing furniture that fits the space, the space becomes accessible, functional and yes... bigger!

Consistency, Furniture & Rug Sizes and "Blank Space"

  1. Paint. Painting the ceiling, walls and woodwork a consistent colour will help to make the space appear consistent and bigger. Opt out for a lighter colour to brighten up the space and help to reflect natural light around the room.
  2. Use appropriate sized furniture and rugs. Choosing furniture that fits the space without overcrowding the room is a key factor in making a space appear bigger. For rug sizes, a rug that fits all furniture on it - more specifically, with the two front legs on it, is the right size to choose.
  3. Leaving blank space in shelving styling allows the eye to rest. By decluttering busy areas, there is an ease while occupying the space. Organize daily items, such as remote controllers, books, electronics and charging cables in boxes of the same size, shape & colour will allow the space to feel organized and calm.

Simplicity is Key!

  1. When choosing furniture, less is more. Selecting the right furniture statement pieces that are not too large for the space, will contribute to a space that feels bigger. Sofas that are raised on legs will automatically give the illusion of additional space.
  2. Only keep items that are necessary for the space. Styling with trays and vases can add value to the room, but it is important to be simple with the styling. Choose accessories that are in the same colour palette (this includes throw pillows)!
  3. Stick to one or two accent colours that compliment each other and the finishes in the room, such as the wall colour.

Organization, Organization, Organization!

  1. Creating a designated space for items is important to keeping the space simple, decluttered and clean. A clean, organized space contributes to a space that feels open and inviting. Keeping tabletops and coffee tables clear and easy to wipe down is important, as it makes the space accessible.
  2. Hiding electrical cords, gaming consoles and TV boxes in a media cabinet will help the space feel bigger by eliminating the clutter.
  3. Consider the use of each item that is kept in main areas. Keeping items that are only used once a year can be stored under a bed, in linen closets or the garage, if this is an option.

Let There be Light

  1. Maximizing the natural light entering your home will automatically open up the space. Use light, sheer curtains in areas where you desire light to flood in. Lighter colours in furniture, paint and frames will contribute to a more bright, airy space.
  2. Mirrors can add depth to a room and allow light to bounce around the space and help reflect natural light. Placing floor mirrors behind sofas or in smaller spaces will help to make the space feel larger.
