When designing kids’ rooms, there are a few things to keep in mind. The space should allow for them to grow into the space for upcoming years and it is advised to have items that can allow for easy transition between growing periods. For example, a solid dresser that can fit many size clothing and a bookshelf to hold keepsakes and toys/gadgets to be easily accessed during playtime.

First, it is best to keep to a consistent color palette. The goal is a fun, less-crowded space that allows for creativity. Dressers and bedframes can be different colors for a more playful look, or match to be more formal. It all depends on the overall look you are trying to achieve!

Short on Space?

For homes with limited rooms, bunk beds are an efficient way to save space. Place baskets with accessible throw pillows and blankets to cozy up the room. Allow the children occupying the room to have a sense of identity by having differing wall décor with matching or varying sized frames, and by adding a few differing throw pillows to each bed.

For themes, there are general rules to follow if the intent is to align the kid’s room to match the design of the rest of the home.

Design with a Theme in Mind

Bohemian

Use bright pastels with white and natural toned accents, wicker and rattan baskets, and fun décor items, such as rainbows, star lights, and plush floor pillows or bean bags. Rugs in these areas can be plush and soft and cream-colored, or use a bolder design with muted pinks, reds and blues.

Rustic Farmhouse

Whitewashed solid furniture with plaid accents, animal-focused wall décor and a neutral color palette. Lighting can include rustic wood framing or distinct industrial black framed metal to complete this look.

Scandinavian

Soft wool plush rugs, neutral linen bedding and pillows, simple geometric white & black zig-zag patterning. Seating can be cream colored or white and the furniture is a light wood, such as maple or white. White dressers are recommended to keep the space light & airy.

Modern

Dark navy rugs, gold accent lamps and bold wall prints are the way to go. Furniture can be white, black or grey to tie in the modern flair. For accent pillows, use grey or black velvets, and white bookshelves and wall shelves to add a bit of brightness.

Traditional

Bigger, bulkier furniture that is a-framed, consistently matching and structural. Keep the look sophisticated by adding in pops of pale pinks and blues in the pillows and décor. Desk lighting should be structural and matching. Pale greys or whites are recommended for furniture colors.

Contemporary

This style can be incorporated into a kid’s room to allow the child to grow into their space. Ages 6+ is a good age to keep in mind. Bold, contrasting elements such as globe chandeliers and asymmetrical furniture are good to keep in mind while designing this space. Dark royal blues, deep teals and whites all will accent each other well in this space!
