How to Design a Bedroom Oasis!

POSTED: May 2, 2022

After a long day, there is nothing more satisfying than unwinding in a bedroom that feels like your own personal oasis. Soft sheets and fluffy pillows are the first step in creating a restful night’s sleep but what else can help to achieve your #pinterestworthy oasis bedroom?

Start with a Theme

A good place to start is deciding on a theme of the overall vibe & feeling of the room. Once decided, it is simple and easy to maintain that theme in every decision you make once designing the bedroom of your dreams.

Lighting

Lighting can add an elevated or soothing effect to the room, depending on which mood is desired. Matching table lamps on either side of the bed will frame the bed nicely, while sconces or adjustable wall lighting will allow for more room on the nightstands for personal items to use before bed or for styling.

Hanging pendant lights can be installed higher in the room to give a more sophisticated look, if higher ceilings are present or to highlight interesting architecture. Flush mounts are best for rooms with lower ceilings. Currently, there are many options for flush mount lighting that are interesting to look at while still providing ample light to your room. It is advised to consider lighting with dimmable options to create an intimate mood or brighter mood, depending on the time of day to complete tasks while using this space.

Paint

When choosing a paint color, it is important to consider the desired feeling of the room. Cool, muted colors, such as sages, grays or whites will make the room appear clean and crisp. Warm neutrals, such as browns and beiges will make the bedroom feel cozy and deeper blues and greens will make the room feel serene.

Unsure where to start? Here are some suggestions from our In-House Design Expert on paint colors.

Cool & Muted

Sherwin Williams: Evening Shadow. A cool toned, medium-dark gray with a hint of green undertones.

Benjamin Moore: Graytint. A bright, yet soft neutral gray.

Warm Neutrals

Benjamin Moore: Quietude. A warm brown-beige.

Behr: Perfect Penny. A soft terracotta color with mild copper undertones.

Blues & Greens

Benjamin Moore: Stillwater. A deep gray-blue that offers a relaxing setting.

Behr: Vine Leaf. A darker sage green with a calming effect.

Furniture

Choosing furniture is a key aspect in creating your bedroom oasis. As a rule of thumb, matching furniture sets can make the space feel outdated and too ‘matchy-matchy’. It is advisable to leave 3 feet of space between the bed and adjacent furniture to allow easy navigation throughout the room (minus the nightstands of course, as these are meant to be close-by)! If you are working with a smaller space, avoid canopy beds or items that are bulky and take up too much space. Brighter furniture, such as whites, greys or lighter woods will allow the space to feel bigger, brighter, and cleaner.

One tip is to pair wall-mounted nightstands and wall sconces to make the space feel modern and less cluttered, while still achieving that oasis feeling. For larger bedrooms, ottomans at the foot of the bed can help to make the room feel complete and can serve as a place to put on cozy slippers. Ottomans with storage come in handy to act as additional storage for pillows and throw blankets when not in use.

Styling

When styling your soon to be oasis, it is best to keep it simple! Place vases in pairs on the dresser with greenery and books stacked with similar binding color on the nightstand. Incorporate minimal décor on the nightstands to achieve a clean and serene look. To achieve a cohesive look, style with consistent metals and accent colors in the décor, such as silver, gold or black.
